Terry Pratchett’s study

This is not a replica of Terry Pratchett’s study. To do that, I would have needed pictures from every angle and exact measurements, so this is just a small part of a study, where Terry Pratchett might have felt at home, in scale 1:12.

If you read “The Borrowers” as a child, you might imagine a tiny, Terry Pratchetty fellow occupy this study, whenever the house is quiet..

I found some pictures of the study online, but not very many. Fortunately, I’ve had great help from The Cunning Artificer, Mr. Bernard Pearson, who has been so kind to answer my multiple questions, and for that I am very grateful.

This little project has taken about a month and a half, and researching details about Terry Pratchett has been so much fun.

This world needs magic and imaginative and quirky minds.

This world needed Terry Pratchett.

Verden havde brug for Terry Pratchett.

The bookcases are essential, and a bit messy. The first section to the right holds “DiscWorld”, and some of Terry Pratchett’s other books. Every book is made individually, with the correct cover – I had some trouble finding full covers. Of course, when the books are placed on the shelves, nobody can really tell if they are correct or not – but I know.

This book is a signed, first edition of “Good Omens”. The inscription says “Burn this book!” 😊

Bogen her er en signeret førsteudgave af “Good Omens”, og inskriptionen lyder: “Brænd denne bog!” 😊

I had a picture of this wall, so that was helpful. The fireplace is made of wood and plaster. The standing eagle lectern, used to hang his leather jacket and legendary hat, was a bit challenging. The eagle is made of clay, and the rest wood – and then brass spray paint. The leather jacket is hand sewn with very thin goat leather, and you really need very thin leather, preferably 0,3 mm. Sewing a jacket from 1 mm leather would equal a normal size jacket in 1,2 cm leather. Fortunately, a while back, a bookbinder sent me a little bag of bookbinding leather scraps, very thin.

The hat is felted with very fine merino wool. It took some doing, because I don’t have miniature wool fibres from miniature sheep, so felting a hat, that will fit on your fingertip with normal wool fibres is a bit hard. Also, as it turned out, I was fresh out of mercury, and that can really make a hatter mad. 😊

The picture above the fireplace is “Great T’Phon rising”, by Paul Kidby, and behind the eagle lectern is “Mors Ultima Ratio”, also Paul Kidby.

The firewood is twigs from a big, old tulip tree, which a winter storm took down in my yard.

The armchair is made from wood, sheet foam and leather, and I used sandpaper and wax to make it look a bit worn. The blanket is knitted with wool and silk thread, with 0,7 mm knitting needles.

“The Librarian” is sitting on the little chest, and there’s a candle – by the way, the best way to make a miniature candle look, as if it has been lit, is to light it, so this little candle did burn for a few seconds. I used a bit of a straw for a mold.

The manuscript is the first 50 pages of the first DiscWorld book, “The Colour of Magic”.

I picked the clock up from the miniature Clocksmith, so it’s in good, working order.

The sword is pewter – I don’t have neither the skills nor the equipment to go all the way from iron ore to sword.

Manuskriptet er den første DiscWorld-bog, “The Colour of Magic”.

In the chest, there’s the remaining 100 pages of “The Colour of Magic” – every page downscaled, printed and put together in the correct order. There’s also old newspapers – a page from The Herald from the day, Terry Pratchett was knighted, some pages about beekeeping, some of Paul Kidby’s cover drawings, a star map, etc.

The top left screen shows a Wiki-page about processing iron ore, the bottom left a page from National Center of Reptile Welfare.

Top and bottom middle screens are first chapter of “The Shepherd’s Crown”, the last DiscWorld book.

Top right is Doom, the video game.

Bottom right is a wiki-page on early onset Alzheimer’s.

The desk is made from 1,5 mm veneer, and the table top is a marvelous mess.

The telephone and the keyboard are 3D-printed, one of the son’s friends made those for me, so I just painted them. I bought the metal items and the hour glass – one day I might experiment more with pewter casting.

The pencils are 0,6 mm, and I went for hexagonal, but I’m not at all sure how many edges, they have.

The cat peeps out from the cat den in the desk. The hole in my desk is bigger than the real one, but my cat is an old cat, snatched from the little, miniature farmhouse, so it wasn’t very flexible.

This picture with a ballpoint pen is just for size reference.

I made this as a present for the son, so here it is, tucked in between his Discworld-books.

These are some of the pictures, I used for inspiration. The last one is from Salisbury Museum’s exhibition “Terry Pratchett: HisWorld”.

I really enjoyed reading this and loved the process and seeing the photos you used for inspiration. I’ve been reading the disc world series again and discovering things I didn’t know as a kid. I will think about this model the next time that I put on one of the audiobooks.

Amazing. The attention to detail and all the loving touches. I’m in awe. Thank you for making this and thank you for sharing the process too. I had the good fortune to stand in the Chapel once (his last office) as well as going to an exhibition that re-created it for a museum – and your model really captures the heart and soul of Terry and Discworld.

I was directed here by your son posting it on Mastodon. What a wonderful mom you must be – this is just tremendous. I love the details of the build process and how you credit those who helped you with it. I don’t know much Pratchett – have read maybe 3-4 books by him and probably need to read more – but I have no doubt you’ve nailed it. Thanks so much for the post and for making your son so happy.

I came over from Mastodon, after seeing the photos your son posted there; his joy over this magnificent present is lovely to behold.

I am amazed that it only took you a month to complete the whole room, there is so much attention to detail. Even though it may not be a precise reproduction, I’m sure Sir Terry would feel very much at home there (should he be able to become small enough to fit).

Now I must explore the rest of your blog; I can tell there are many marvels to uncover there as well. (I love miniatures myself, but I have nowhere near your skill or talent.)

    What a wonderful, wonderful project!
I learned about it on Mastodon, and how you gave this to your son. What a precious gift, may it stay in the family for centuries. I can’t even express all I feel when I look at this. It’s so wonderful.
I always wanted to read Pratchett’s books but life, depressions, and Stuff got in the way. I think this may finally nudge me in the right direction.

    1. SussiDK Avatar

I’m really happy, thet you enjoyed this. I took up making miniatures a few years ago, when I retired – and it gives me so much joy, and I can go on for hours and hours, day by day – I think, it’s because for me it’s the right combination of research and crafting. I love the challenge of figuring out how to make every little item, and I get carried away.. for instance, printing out a whole 150 page manuscript, putting all these tiny pages in the right order etc.. it has no practical value, but I enjoy it. The darkness and loneliness of depression is one of the hardest things, and person can go through, and often made even harder by the feeling that you need to pretend, so that it’s easier for people around you.
I hope the best for you.
